Unlike typical SQL databases, Riak is comprised as a cluster of nodes and designed to run in a distributed environment. Core operations, such as read/writing data and executing map/reduce jobs improve in performance when additional Riak nodes are added to a cluster – this allows you to use a set of smaller and less expensive machines to store and retrieve data instead of a single large and expensive server that may not be fault tolerant.

Riak is offered in two versions: Open Source and Enterprise DS. Enterprise DS is a superset of the open source version with additional features including SNMP support, inter-datacenter replication, web-based administration interface, and direct support from Basho Technologies.

There are 5 recommended starter configurations for Riak:
Open Source:

  • 3 node, 3 x 1GB Open Source Riak SmartMachines
  • 3 node, 3 x 2GB Open Source Riak SmartMachines

Enterprise DS:

  • 5 node, 5 x 4GB Enterprise DS Riak SmartMachines
  • 5 node, 5 x 8GB Enterprise DS Riak SmartMachines
  • 5 node, 5 x 16GB Enterprise DS Riak SmartMachines
